Abstract

Indonesia is known as a country that has a long list of endangered wildlife. Some people still like to trade protected animals, both alive to be kept and in preserved form. To find out this, it is necessary to conduct research on the existence of protected animals at animal trading centers in West Sumatra. This study aims to inventory and identify protected species that are traded and to determine the distribution of trade in protected animals at animal trading centers in West Sumatra. This research was conducted from May to July 2022. This research used the direct observation method and the unstructured interview method. The results showed that 27 species were traded, namely nine species in Padang City, six species in Bukittinggi City, and 20 species traded in Payakumbuh City. From the results of the analysis it was found that 67% of local species were traded, 11% of species from outside the area and 22% of foreign species. Of the 27 species identified, there are five protected species and all of them are aves class, namely, Cica Daun Sayap Biru , Sepah Raja, Ekek Layongan, Tangkar Ongklet and Takur Bukit which are protected in the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry according to P.106 of 2018 concerning protected plant and animal species.
